Datamatrix is a two-dimensional barcode represented as a square or rectangular matrix composed of dark and light modules arranged in a precise grid pattern. The symbol contains a finder pattern, which assists in orientation and structural decoding. Encoded data is translated into a series of dark and light modules based on a predefined element size known as the X-dimension.

The format supports variable-length data encoding, leading to differently sized symbols depending on the amount of information stored. The size of the resulting barcode correlates directly with the quantity and type (numeric or alphanumeric) of data encoded, with more bits requiring a larger symbol.

In its square form, Datamatrix can encode up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters or 3,116 numeric digits. Multiple encoding schemes such as ASCII, ISO/IEC 646, C40, Text, X12, EDIFACT, and Base 256 can be used within the same symbol to optimize data density and efficiency. Using a subset of ISO/IEC 646 (comparable to ASCII), which supports most characters encountered in everyday computing environments, is recommended as the default encoding method for broad compatibility.
